WWE doesn’t have too much titles

One issue that fans have had with WWE in the present day is that fans think that there are to many championships. To me this couldn’t be further from the truth, as I do think that there is room for two more titles in WWE, more on that later. I do however see where people are coming from when they think that WWE has to many. For the sake of this article, let’s consider NXT as a separate promotion, which in some aspects it is, plus I want to focus on the main roster for this article.

There are 9 current titles on the main roster, the Universal, WWE, Intercontinental, United States, Cruiserweight, 2 Tag Team, and 2 Women’s Championships. While some of the current champions are questionable (Lesnar is the worst) I think that this is a solid number of titles. However, there has been rumors of the WWE creating a Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships, and the inevitable (I think at this point) Women’s Tag Team Championships, that number would jump to 11. Is that to many, possibly. However, let’s look at this from a different perspective. Companies like Progress, ICW, and many more have 4 titles. A World Heavyweight Championship, a mid-card Championship, a Tag Team Championship, and a Women’s Championship. This works in a smaller promotion, like Progress is only a 6 year old promotion. This is where NXT comes into play. If you look at NXT as a separate promotion, they now fall into this category. Some promotions have chosen to expand on the titles that they own, and let’s first look at Ring of Honor.

Ring of Honor has been around for 16 years and thanks to the likes of CM Punk, Tyler Black, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, and so many other wrestlers helped lift that companies stock. The company went from three championships to five with the addition of the Six-Man Tag Team Titles (2016) and the Women’s Championship (2018). This is a small growth, but this shows the wrestling world that companies can expand and continue to grow. Another great example is the growth of New Japan.

New Japan Pro Wrestling helps my point that WWE doesn't have a too many championship problem, as NJPW has 8 championships. Look at NJPWs biggest card of the year, Wrestle Kingdom 12. All but one match on the main card was for a championship, and before Cody lost the ROH Heavyweight Championship, Cody vs Kota Ibushi was also for a championship. That would’ve meant that all 9 matches on the card would’ve been for a championship. This means that WWE could easily do the same, but I really don’t see that happening. Another point is that New Japan has one show, so they have to find a way to fit the likes of Okada, Ospreay, Scurll, Young Bucks, Naito, EVIL & SANADA, Jay White, AND Goto onto the same card for the same event. You also add in the likes of Omega, Ibushi, Cody, Tanahashi, Elgin, Robinson, Takahashi, Killer Elite Squad, Suzuki, and a ton more on the same card since they are such big names for the company. This is where WWE has the upper hand.

The 9 WWE titles are spread across three shows, Raw, Smackdown, and 205 Live. Both Raw and Smackdown have 4 titles respectively, while 205 Live gets only 1. This allows for some wiggle room for Raw and Smackdown and allows them to be more creative. While it is all one company, the brands still compete. I do believe that right now, the WWE has just enough titles, but if they add 11, then there may be an issue.
