Will Darren Till Follow The Same Path As Francis Ngannou?
You’ve already read the title, you know what this is about. What path did Ngannou go on that Till could possibly follow? I’ll tell you. Back in 2017, Francis Ngannou was the next big thing, nobody could stop him and when he stepped up to face Allistar Overeem, the pressure was on but Ngannou prevailed, knocking out Overeem with an uppercut in the first round. It was confirmed that Stipe Miocic will fight Francis Ngannou just a month later with the belt on the line. This was his biggest fight of his life. Ngannou was the next big thing, he can’t lose...right? Miocic dominated him for 5 rounds and later that year when he fought Derrick Lewis, many thought - myself included, Ngannou was going to win this fight and go back up the rankings and what happened? Ngannou flung 11 strikes in all 3 rounds, not only was it a bad fight, it was embarrassing.
Let’s look at Darren Till, Till has been on a roll in the UFC, with win after win and he gets a title fight. This is his biggest fight of his life, he’s the next big thing. Woodley won round 1, knocked Till down in round 2 and made him tap out. This is a similar story to Ngannou isn’t it? Now, we don’t know when Till’s next fight is but his next fight is make or break. If Till loses his next fight, it’s not the end of the world for the young fighter but if he ‘Ngannou’s’ it then he may never recover.
To answer the question, will he follow the same path as Ngannou, I don’t think he will. I think mentally, he has a bigger mindset and won’t let Woodley shatter his confidence like when Miocic shattered Ngannou’s. I don’t know who Till fights next but personally I hope he moves up to middleweight as I think he finds the weight cut exhausting.
