Why The UFC Lightweight Division Is The Most Exciting Weight Class

Picture
There are 10 UFC male weight classes ranging from featherweights to middleweights and welterweights to heavyweights but the weight class which is the most entertaining might just be the lightweight division and today we talk about why.

The lightweight division is infamous for wars. Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis put on a war at UFC 229 and what a fight that was. Grey Maynard and Frankie Edgar was unbelievable. Nate Diaz and Cowboy Cerrone was a fantastic fight as well. The lightweights aren’t afraid to leave it all in the octagon and that’s why the weight class is so exciting.

It feels like most UFC fighters lack personalities which is totally fine in a sport as gruelling as MMA but the fighters with personalities are fighters which are most talked about with the biggest example being the notorious one, Conor McGregor who made a name for himself with his trash talk and his whacky character. It’s not just in the light division, look at Chael Sonnen who tries to belittle his middleweight opponents just by verbally abusing them. Back to lightweights now, most lightweights have personalities like Khabib Nurmagomedov; a no nonsense grappler who will grapple you and destroy you or Donald Cerrone who calls himself the cowboy and wears a hat to hack it up. Nate Diaz who is a gangster and Tony Ferguson who is just fun to watch.

Another reason why the lightweight division is so entertaining to watch is the different styles each fighter has. Going back to the champion Nurmagomedov who is a straight wrestler and you compare him to dangerous striker, Edson Barboza who is straight kicks. You also have Justin Gaethje who is an all rounder. Conor McGregor is an unpredictable striker - the whole lightweight division is got a different style of fighting and that’s what makes it so incredibly entertaining.

The UFC lightweight division is fantastic right now but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t any other great weight classes as there is like: featherweights, welterweights, middleweights and the light heavyweight division which is only improving with top prospects making their way up the ranks. The other weight classes are good but need work done for example; bantamweight. Great class with great fighters but it’s not at that level that it could be at. The lightweight division will always have eyes on it and that’s just great.
