UFC 7 Review

Picture
It’s a Sunday and I feel like it’s the appropriate time to watch and review UFC 7. This should be good so strap yourself in as it’s going to be a fun time!
Picture

Marcos Ruas Vs. Larry Cureton (Quarter Finals)

They grapple almost straight away and Ruas just slams Cureton down, Cureton is a big man so that was impressive! Ruas looks to go for a triangle choke but can’t apply it and he holds Cureton down towards him. Cureton gets on top now but Ruas looks for an armbar - very creative fighter he is. Cureton throws shots and tries to get up but struggles to do so as Ruas still has grip of his leg. Ruas locks in a leg hold and Cureton taps out!

My Thoughts: Great performance from Marcos Ruas here.
Picture

Remco Pardoel Vs. Ryan Parker (Quarter Finals)

Parker and Pardoel clinches against the cage. Parker takes Pardoel down with a standard hip toss - by god, I love a good hip toss. He gets him in a side headlock and that looks tight. I imagine you don’t get taught that in American top team. Pardoel makes Parker tap out with the lapel choke and he advances to the semi finals.

My Thoughts: Great win for Remco Pardoel.
Picture

Harold Howard Vs. Mark Hall (Quarter Finals)

Howard is trying to intimidate Hall and lands some great body shots. He takes Hall down but Hall lands some great punches as he’s the one in top. Howard is bleeding and it’s not just a little nose bleed, he’s bleeding. Howard taps out and Mark Hall wins.

My Thoughts: This was a fast fight and Mark Hall is going to the semi finals while Howard heads to the hospital.
Picture

Paul Varelans Vs. Gerry Harris (Quarter Finals)

Varelans goes and tries to take Harris down early on and he does. Varelans starts to land punches right to the head of Harris. He locks in a rear naked choke while still throwing like punches and he taps out and that’s all she wrote!

My Thoughts: This was a big W for Varelans.
Picture

Marcos Ruas Vs. Remco Pardoel (Semi Finals)

Ruas hits a leg kick early on, Pardoel observes these and grapples hi, against the cage. He gets Ruas in a front face lock for like a good 3 minute or so. Finally, Pardoel brings Ruas down to the ground with the lock still applied. Ruas finally advances position and enters guard. He goes for a leg lock and Pardeol might be in trouble. We have already saw Ruas make somebody tap out with that submission. They’re at a bit of stand still for a while. Ruas enters side control now and he looks to advance his position. Ruas sits on top of Pardoel and Pardoel doesn’t like it? He taps out and this felt anti-climatic!

My Thoughts: Why’d he tap out to ‘that?’
Picture

Mark Hall Vs. Paul Varelans (Semi Finals)

Varelans gets a hold of Hall early on and takes him down, he’s a wrestler. He gets him in a headlock. He throws elbows and that does damage, he locks in a key lock and it’s over.

My Thoughts: Paul Varelans is off to the finals!
Picture

Marcos Ruas Vs. Paul Varelans (Finals)

Varelans gets a hold of Ruas early on but he breaks free and assaults Varelans with leg kicks. Varelans grapples him and holds him against the wall of the octagon. Varelans delivers leg kicks of his own new and it’s Ruas who has hold of Varelans. They clinch against the cage for several minutes. Ruas has a hold of Varelans but whatever his plan is, it’s not working but that doesn’t stop him from doing it for at least 3 minutes. Ruas hits a nice elbow to Varelans. We’re approaching 13minhtes and Ruas starts to land big strikes and it’s finished! Ruas has won the UFC 7 tournament.

My Thoughts: Ruas had a great tournament so it’s good to see him win here.
Picture

Ken Shamrock (C) Vs. Oleg Taktarov (UFC Superfight Championship)

Taktarov tries a leg kick early on, Shamrock tries to intimidate him with his orthodox stance. Shamrock hasn’t really went for a shot and we’re almost a minute into the fight. He takes Taktarov down to the ground. They fight on the ground for a good bit with Shamrock on top. John McCarthy gets them up because he is bored of watching them on the ground. Shamrock takes him down again and here we go. Taktarov is bleeding but nothing too major. They get back up but not for long, imagine if they stood standing for longer than a minute, would be insane right? We’re approaching 30 minutes - Taktarov hits Shamrock with a good right punch. We’re in overtime now but unfortunately it’s a draw.

My Thoughts: This was a decent fight, nothing we haven’t seen before.

Overall Thoughts: Overall, this was a good PPV - not fantastic but nothing awful. Certainly going to be interesting to see where this ends up on the PPV rankings.
