UFC 235: What Happens Next
UFC 235 was last night and what a night it was with the two title fights, Ben Askren’s UFC debut and even Cody Garbrandt being finished in the opening round - let’s see what happens next.
The first person we have to look at is 11-3 and former bantamweight champion, Cody Garbrandt. Garbrandt lost the opening bout and has lost his last 3 fights, with his last win being against Dominick Cruz at UFC 207. Garbrandt is slowly falling away from being a top contender which is sad for a fighter who was 11-0. The guy I want to see Garbrandt fight next is a guy who fought on the prelims and a fellow Cody: Cody Stamann. This would be a big fight for both individuals as it is a must win fight for Garbrandt and at the same time, a win for Stamann would do wonders for his career.
Pedro Munhoz and Garbrandt put on a fantastic fight with both men exchanging shots - it really was 50/50 and Munhoz won which was a colossal win for him as he was favoured to lose by many people - myself included. Munhoz will be high in the rankings come Monday so he needs a fight with a well known opponent and I think that opponent should be a returning Dominick Cruz. I think this makes perfect sense, it allows Munhoz to test himself against a big name and it lets Cruz get back in the octagon.
What’s there to say about Tecia Torres? She lost last night but I think he should fight Cortney Casey next. I just think it would be a fun fight that could take place on the prelims of a fight night in like May or June.
Weili Zhang is a Chinese MMA fighter and despite losing her first ever MMA fight, she has improved greatly with her winning her next 19 fights which is staggering! She’s not lost a fight since 2013 and that’s just great. I want a remotely big fight for Zhang next and that is the tenth ranked strawweight, Felice Herrig. I would just like to see this fight play out and if Zhang can hang with bigger names.
Robbie Lawler put on an impressive performance last night and at one point, even slammed Ben Askren down and almost finished him with punches but Askren was to much for Lawler and submitted Lawler in the first round with many people calling it “an early stoppage” but despite what people think, Lawler lost and they need to accept that. I think the next fight for Lawler should be Demain Maia - I think this would be a good fight for both men.
It’s good to see Ben Askren fight in the UFC and it’s even better to see him with a win, he’s started his UFC career with a win over a former champion and that’s impressive, he struggled throughout the fight but he’s got his eye set on the winner of Till Vs. Masvidal so I think that’s who’s next for the funky one - I really hope it’s Till.
Don’t know what happened here, to be honest. Woodley just couldn’t be bothered carrying the title so just let Usman beat him. That’s literally the only explanation I can think of. Why didn’t Woodley try and win? Anyway, Woodley should head up to the middleweight division and have a big fight straight away because let’s be honest, he’s not getting a rematch so let’s move weight class and fight: Jacaré Souza - would just be a laugh.
There’s only one fight for the new Welterweight champion and that is Colby Covington. Let’s do this fight.
I didn’t think Lionheart would win and that leaves him in an awkward position, he can fight a higher ranked opponent but if he wins, will he get a title fight? Will the UFC just give him a rematch? I don’t know but let’s have Anthony Smith fight Alexander Gustafasson on the Stockholm card in June.
Who beats Jon Jones? I don’t know. All I know is there’s someone in the weight class who’s been doing good recently and has found the perfect division for him and I am talking about Thiago Santos. I think Jones wins this but let’s have the fight anyway.
