The Problem With: Money Fights
It’s been a while since we’ve did an MMA: The Problem With article, in fact it was the 27th of April, when we first did one and the site was only 4 days old! Since then, we haven’t done one single episode in the series so let’s bring it back. I’ve got a problem with money fights so let’s dive deeper.
What are money fights? Money fights are big fights designed to gain publicity, like Floyd Mayweather Vs. Conor McGregor - the tag line was literally “The Money Fight”. Money fights get a lot of people talking and that’s why they’re there. In 2018, we get a lot of money fights often for no reason - Khabib Nurmagomedov’s first title defence was against Conor McGregor and even though there was other people in the division more worthy of a title fight, McGregor still got it, why? Because he’s a big name and people are destined to buy the PPV and it ended up becoming the highest bought PPV of all time.
Now let’s jump into why I’ve got a problem with it. There’s people more rewarding, like for instance, Curtis Blaydes is working his way up the ranks and if he beats Francis Ngannou then he should get the title shot but he won’t. Why? Because Brock Lesnar will have a title fight after 2 years out of the UFC and failing a drug test in his most recent fight but that’s okay because he’s a draw. Same with Jon Jones, he’s getting a title fight after being away for so long, at least five him a normal fight first?
Now don’t get me wrong, I like a big fight just as much as the next guy as I am interested in seeing what would happen but I’m also a big fan of rankings and people getting their deserved title shot. What do you think? Am I being too harsh or do you agree, feel free to tell us on twitter: @ThingsCombat.
