WWE Summerslam 2014 Review

Written by Ben Mawson

The night Suplex City was born! Brock Lesnar was on fire back in 2014 after he ended the historic Wrestlemania streak of The Undertaker and it didn’t seem like anything was stopping The Beast. That Summerslam, he challenged WWE World Heavyweight Champion, John Cena in a rematch of their Extreme Rules match only a few years earlier.

The Miz (C) Vs. Dolph Ziggler (WWE Intercontinental Championship)

This was a exciting match to kick off the show with both wrestlers putting on a great show of strength, agility and late kickouts throughout. The two men have had an established history in the ring and it really showed in this classic Summerslam match.

Thoughts: This was a really good match but after all you wouldn't expect anything less from the Miz, Ziggler is alright too with him eventually getting a, lucky Zig Zag on Miz to win the championship.

AJ Lee (C) Vs. Paige (Divas Championship)

Suprisingly, this was a good match. There were a lot of hair pulling and slapping but still entertaining at the same time. In a time of divas, these two really did kick start the women’s era in WWE.

Thoughts: Another very good match to be honest, I didn't think it would be but I can put my hands up and say I am glad I was wrong.

Rusev Vs. Jack Swagger (Flag Match)

This is back when the Bulgarian Rusev was just Russian Rusev and the winner would get his flag above the ring in a patriotic gesture, and also a fun match with these two power houses going ham on each other. This was one of the rare times in WWE where the American lost and Rusev continued his tear in the WWE.

Thoughts: This was okay as far as the wrestling goes but the whole flag waving business was pretty fun.

Seth Rollins Vs. Dean Ambrose (Lumberjack Match)

What a match, it's just great non stop action all the way through, and even with the lumberjacks it spills to the ringside and deep into the crowd with Ambrose almost single handedly taking out all the lumberjacks, at one point all the lumberjacks are carrying Seth back to the ring and Ambrose jumps from the to rope and takes them all out in one go. These two had a fantastic rivalry back in 2014 and this wasn’t the end despite Seth Rollins’ won over Ambrose here.

Thoughts: This one is a match I would definitely recommend watching if you haven't seen it already.

Bray Wyatt Vs. Chris Jericho

This was another okay back and forth fight with the whole match being pretty equal with both men showing moments of dominance. Wyatt needed this win as he lost to John Cena at that year’s Wrestlemania so it was good that he got a win over somebody such as Chris Jericho.

Thoughts: This was an even match with Bray coming up victorious in the end (Nothing Special).

Stephanie McMahon Vs. Brie Bella

Yet again, another okay match with nothing special coming up until the very end when Nikki Bella comes in and attacks Brie Bella. I didn’t see this one coming and was totally surprised.

Thoughts: This was only really enjoyable because of the plot twist at the end that spices it up a bit but other than that, nothing too great.

Roman Reigns Vs. Randy Orton

Thank goodness, after those last two matches the card really needed a match to bring some life back into it, and oh boy does it do just that? This is a fast action packed battle between two powerhouses of the game as the viper takes on the big dog. This was Roman’s first Summerslam match since splitting with The Shield and got the win with a spear.

Thoughts: This match is great apart from the 4 count the ref does that Roman doesn't kick out of till after the third count, but that's made up for by Orton catching Reigns in a RKO when he went for the superman punch, also a great spear to end the match.

John Cena (C) Vs. Brock Lesnar (WWE World Heavyweight Championship)

We all know how this ends a F5 straight out the gate that Cena kicks out of, then comes Lesnar's brutal attack of 16 suplexes that totally destroys Cena and leaves him battered and broken. This was a shocking match, I didn’t think that John Cena would be so easily man-handled especially since Cena defeated Lesnar just two years before this encounter.

Thoughts: This was a good end to the show

Overall Thoughts: This started great had a slight dip but ended good so for that I'm giving it a 7 out of 10 stars. It was a pretty solid Summerslam event.
