WWF Summerslam 1999
Review
Summerslam, Summerslam, Summerslam - will these reviews ever end? No. Here we are now in the year 1999 and it’s time to conclude this week of reviews and before we approach the new millennium, we need to review this PPV so let’s get this done!
D’Lo Brown (C) Vs. Jeff Jarrett (WWF European & Intercontinental Championship)
Our first match tonight should actually be a decent one as it’s Jeff Jarrett taking on WWF European and Intercontinental champion, D’Lo Brown. This was a good match with some good moves throughout. Jarrett tried to hit Brown with a guitar but Mark Henry takes it off of him and then proceeds to hit Brown with it and Jarrett takes the pin. After the match, Mark Henry celebrates with Jarrett.
Thoughts: This was a short yet enjoyable match, this was actually kind of fun. I didn’t see the Mark Henry heel turn coming but I liked it.

Tag Team Turrmoil
The turmoil kicks off with Edge & Christian taking on The Hardy Boyz. This goes on for a few minutes, it was a fun match while it lasted.
The next match is Edge & Christian taking on Viscera and Mideon. They are big boys. They take the majority of the match but after they take out Viscera and Edge spears Mideon then they pick up the win.
Out comes Prince Albert & Droz. Albert goes after Edge and tries to charge him into the corner but Edge jumped out the way. I enjoyed when Albert had Edge above his shoulders and Christian chopblocked the legs of Albert and Edge falls on top of Albert - an enjoyable moment. They get the win.
It’s time for The Acolytes to take part in the match. They dominate this, Bradshaw just throws Edge and Christian about. Farooq also does damage and just dominates Edge but a DDT from Edge turns this around. Christian and Bradshaw both get tagged in and teamwork from Edge & Christian lay out Bradshaw. The Holly Cousins come out and wait for their turn. Bradshaw wins with a clothesline from Hell.
Immediately after the bell rings to conclude the Edge and Christian and The Acolytes Match, The Holly Cousins jump in. This doesn’t last very long with The Acolytes winning after a spinebuster. After the match, The Holly Cousins push each other but nothing comes from it.
Thoughts: This was a great match and was really enjoyable, great Tag wrestling throughout.
Road Dogg comes out to say that he will get a hardcore title shot tomorrow night on RAW. Chris Jericho interrupts him and he rambles on and I think he ended up calling Road Dogg “dyslexic”. Road Dogg has a short reply and that’s the end of that.

The Big Bossman (C) Vs. Al Snow (WWF Hardcore Championship)
Al Snow waits by the entrance and assaults The Big Bossman in bus entrance. Road Dogg who was on commentary has left the booth and is commentating somewhere else. Bossman & Snow brawl backstage. We see Road Dogg in the background of this fight. The two use all sorts of weapon. Bossman tried to throw a metal keg into Snow but Snow avoids it and the keg smashes into the vending machine. They are now outside the venue. They end up heading to a restaurant/pub and they even go inside it with the two brawling in a restroom. Snow does a moonsault from the bar. They smash beer bottles over each other heads. Road Dogg smashes a bottle off of Bossman. Snow pins him on top of the snooker table for the win. After the match, Snow goes after Stevie Richards and The Blue Meanie.
Thoughts: I really enjoyed this match, it shows what WWE can do with the 24/7 title nowadays.

Ivory (C) Vs. Tori (WWF Women’s Championship)
Tori immediately runs into the ring but Ivory goes after her. This was a really short match that went roughly less than 5 minutes or so. This was a bit rubbish if I’m telling the truth. Ivory wins with a sunset flip that looked a bit weird. After the match, Ivory tries to pull down Tori’s trousers and takes off her bra. This is the attitude era where this is acceptable. Luna Vachon comes down and makes the save.
Thoughts: Let’s just give this a skip.

Ken Shamrock Vs. Steve Blackman (Lion’s Den Weapons Match)
I must say, I’m rather looking forward to this match as in the last Summerslam (1998) there was a lion dens match and it was actually quite enjoyable so let’s hope this lives up to the expectations. This was fun, the addition of weapons was really different and something we don’t see enough of. Shamrock won as expected but it wasn’t easy for Shamrock as Blackman put up a fight. Shamrock wins with a straight shot to the head of Blackman with a kendo stick.
Thoughts: This was great, I really enjoyed seeing this as it’s a different pace of action we usually see and I definitely want to see more of this.

Shane McMahon Vs. Test (Greenwich Street Fight)
Before the match begins, The Mean Street Posse come out and take seats in the crowd. The match starts outside the ring and the two have a brawl that leads into the ring. They spill into the crowd and Test even takes a sip out of a fan’s cup. Shane takes Test over the barricade and they’re back at the ringside. Test throws Shane into the posse and assaults them but the number game is too much and the Posse unloads. Shane takes a mailbox and takes it to the head of Test. Shane then proceeds to batter Test with a road sign. Shane the proceeds to crack Test with a framed picture of Shane and the Posse which was actually kind of funny. That gained McMahon a 2 count and the match rolls on. Test nails Shane with a power bomb but the Posse distracts the referee so he can’t count the pinfall. This had it all, commentary tables shattered, a fair share of weapons, just the right amount of interference to enjoy it and not get frustrated. Patterson and Briscoe came out and helped Test get the win.
Thoughts: This was a great match, I loved the use of weapons in this one and I enjoyed the story.

Kane & X-Pac (C) Vs. The Unholy Alliance (WWF Tag Team Championships)
The two teams brawl to begin the match. This went over 10 minutes and was actually quite a good match. All four of these men would go on to be WWF Champions so it’s star studded in the WWF Tag division and the winners of this will fight the Acolytes the next night. The Unholy Alliance were the ones to win the titles and it was a fun match.
Thoughts: Not a bad match. This was good.

The Rock Vs. Billy Gunn (Kiss My Ass Match)
Mr. Ass takes on the Great one in a “kiss my ass” match which I’ve always found as a weird stipulation. Before the match, Gunn reveals that when he wins, The Rock won’t be kissing Gunn’s ass but instead an older lady’s ass. The two men had a great match, I’ve always been a fan of Gunn’s in-ring work. This was a bit of a long match but that didn’t take the excitement away from it, it only added to it. The lady comes in the ring and she reveals her ripped pantyhose and The Rock puts Billy Gunn’s face to her ass and the rock wins with a people’s elbow shortly after.
Thoughts: Despite the stipulation, I enjoyed this match. Although, I don’t know why Billy Gunn didn’t kiss The Rock’s ass as The Rock won the match? I don’t know why I’m even asking that question!

Stone Cold (C) Vs. Mankind Vs. Triple H (WWF Championship)
As expected, this was chaotic, it felt like at every moment, there was another thing that just kicked off. Triple H even pulled out a chair out of no where. This is a brawl between these 3 men and it’s a great match. Jesse Ventura refuses to count Triple H’s pin and Shane McMahon comes down. Stone Cold stunners Shane. Ventura throws Shane out of the ring and the match goes on. This match had near finish after near finish but ended up with Mankind planting Stone Cold with his infamous DDT to capture the WWF Championship. After the match, Triple H beats up Stone Fold with Chyna fending off the referees.
Thoughts: This was a great match, this was chaos. This has so many close calls and realistically, anybody could’ve won it but I’m glad Mankind was the one to win.
Overall Thoughts: You know what? This was a very very good Summerslam! I’m going to give it an 8 out of 10 as I thought it was a great show, one of the better Summerslams, I’ve reviewed so far and next for me is 2002.
Rating: 8/10
