Rumble Reviews: 1989

Picture
The second royal rumble was in 1989 and this one was the first 30 man rumble. Without further ado let’s review the 1989 royal rumble match.

Number one is Ax from Demolition which feels like something in a WWE video game. Can Ax from Demolition win the match from number one?

Number two is Smash?! What are the chances? Surely they would’ve told each other what number they are or do wrestlers keep it secret? Anyway the two go for it.

Picture
The third entrant is Andre The Giant. Demolition team up to take out Andre. It’ll be interesting to see who number four is and maybe they could help poor Andre.

Picture
Number four is Mr. Perfect and somehow I think Andre’s chances are slimmer than ever. Forget that, Mr Perfect doesn’t care, he’s going for everybody. Smash is now eliminated. The Dream Team (Ax & Mr Perfect) go after The Giant. Andre headbutts Mr Perfect who almost falls over the ropes.

The fifth participant is Ronnie Garvin.

Greg Valentine is out next and it’s 4 against one. Ax is still remaining and Garvin is gone.

Jake The Snake is out at 7 and gets battered by Andre. He tries to eliminate Jake but Greg punches Andre..Andre no sells this and keeps going. The Giant stands on Jake.

Out at number eight, is fan favourite: Ron Bass. Andre tosses out Jake Roberts.

Shawn Michaels is at Number nine and this is his first rumble match. He is currently part of the rockers, he’s not seen that barber shop window and Ax is gone! I didn’t say Ax would win but I was almost certain. Michaels hangs on for the first time, he’ll do that a lot in the next few rumbles.

Picture
Bushwhacker Butch is here and he must be a favourite to win this. Jake The Snake runs down and puts his snake in the ring and Andre eliminates himself.

Picture
At 11 and it’s none other than The Honky Tonk Man. He and Ron attack Butch but Mr. Perfect goes after Honky Tonk. It isn’t long until Honky Tonk works on Michaels.

Tiny Santana is out in his second rumble and he’s wearing an exciting attire. I’ll explain it. It’s white. As always. Butch goes to eliminate Honky but doesn’t. This has been a much better rumble than 1988.

At 13 is none other than Bad News Brown. He goes straight after Ron Bass, everybody’s favourite Ron. Butch eliminates Honky Tonk and celebrates like mad.

Marty Janetty is here to join his Rocker partner. This must be a mistake. It can’t be right. Are my eyes deceiving me? The rockers just eliminated…Ron Bass?! That can’t be right.

It’s the Macho Man at Number 15. He goes straight in and attacks Bad News. He doesn’t even take his bandana off and still has his glasses on but then takes them both off. 8 wrestlers in the ring now. Savage has made this match feel more exciting.

Arn Anderson is here and I hope we see that spinebuster, he gets a sweet chin music from Anderson but Michaels is gone! Macho Man is trying to get out Bad News which isn’t good news for bad news but it’s bad news for Savage as Bad News hangs on.

The other half of the brainbusters is out next as Tully Blanchard joins the chaos. Bushwhacker Butch is still in, he’s my favourite Bushwhacker, come at me Luke. Anderson delivers a beautiful spinebuster to Janetty and Blanchard follows it with a nice elbow. Marty is out.

Hulk Hogan is out next and he goes after Mr. Perfect and tosses him out. He bangs The Brainbusters heads together. Tito Santana is gone from the rumble but Butch is still in. Bad News Brown tries to get out The Hulkster and Blanchard joins in. Anderson even joins in but it’s going to take more than 3 men to take out Hogan, I wish they showed him more in the match because ever since he came in, we haven’t seen enough shots of him.

Picture
Out next is my favourite Bushwhacker, Luke is out next. Come at me Butch and Butch is gone. Brown & Savage exchanged punches but Brown gives Savage a big boot.

Koko B. Ware is here at Number 20. Anderson scales the top rope but Hogan slams him down to the mat instead of throwing him outside, good one Hogan. Two thumbs up from me. B. Ware is out. Luke is also out. Hogan eliminates both of the brainbusters.

The Warlord comes in and the warlord goes out. Hogan then goes onto eliminate Savage & Brown but Savage comes in and now Miss Elizabeth comes in and calms the two down. Savage asks for a handshake and Hogan accepts and they hug. What?

Picture
Big Boss Man is here but Elizabeth and Savage is still here but they quickly leave. Hogan takes out a fresh Big Boss Man. Gotta love Hogan. Big Boss Man hits a piledrivers onto Hogan.

Akeem is here and is the second half of the tag team “The Twin Towers” and they double team Hogan. The two take out Hogan but Hogan pulls out Big Boss Man from under the ring, why!

Brutus The Barber Beefcake comes in and saves Hogan. The Twin Towers double team Beefcake but Hogan takes out Bossman. If it wasn’t for Hogan, how enjoyable would this rumble be? Very, is the answer. Very much so.

At 25 is The Red Rooster. Him & Beefcake go to work on Akeem.

The Barbarian is out here. Good stuff.

Big John Studd is here at 27. He goes after Akeem who won’t budge.

At 28 is Hercules. No, not the rock he only plays Hercules in the movie. I can see the confusion. Studd is still trying to get Akeem out but it’s not working in his favour.

Rick Martel is out here now. He’s hammering at Akeem but John stops him. I think he wants to take Akeem out solo, we’ll see how well that goes soon I’m sure. The Barbarian just hangs on. Martel almost gets the Red Rooster out of the ring. If CM Punk came out 30, what would the crowd reaction be like?

Anyway at 30 is not CM Punk and is actually Ted DiBiase who bought the 30th entrant off of Akeem. The Million Dollar man takes out the rooster. Beefcake takes out Hercules and reminds us all that he’s still in the match. We’re down to the last seven.

Picture
DiBiase and Barbarian eliminates Beefcake & Hercules. Martel takes out Barbarian and we’re down to:

DiBiase
Martel
Studd
Akeem

Akeem takes out Martel. How is Virgil allowed at ringside when no other manager is? How is that fair? Studd & Akeem work together to take out Studd. Is this not exactly like 1988 where Jim Duggan was fighting a team? Studd punches Akeem which sends him out of the ring and we’re down to our final two. Studd & DiBiase. I feel sorry for Dibiase, he spent good money to be number 30 and was in the last 3 with the guy who he bought it from. Money well spent.

Picture
Studd gives DiBiase a few suplexes. Studd tosses DiBiase out and the animal Virgil is unleashed. He gets battered from Studd to close the show.

The Rating:

This rumble was good and a massive improvement from the previous. It did feel like it dragged on though but I’d give it a 6/10.

The Leaderboard:

1) Royal Rumble 1989
2) Royal Rumble 1988

As you can see, 1988 has now entered second place while 1989 has took over first place. It should be interesting to see how long it’s there for.
