G1 Supercard Review

Picture
Last night was the G1 Supercard and what a PPV it was! We’re going to run down the whole card and review it all from start to finish with ratings. This is my first ROH event I’ve watched in almost a whole year so I was really excited to watch this.

Honor Rumble

Minoru Suzuki and Kenny King start the match. They have a good exchange and then Cheeseburger enters the match to a good reaction from the crowd. Man, I miss watching Ring of Honor. Cheeseburger tries to get some action but Suzuki lays him out. I feel bad for him, he tried but he’s still in the match. Number 4 is the Beer City Bruiser and I like him. Cheeseburger tries to get Bruiser but gets bruised from him. Suzuki attacks Bruiser and out comes one half of the IWGP Junior Tag Team Champions, Sho. It isn’t long until the next entrant, felt oddly quick and it’s Shinto Takagi. No eliminations so far and out comes number 7 and it’s Bushi. YOH comes out next and it’s all kicking off now. Ali from Coast to Coast is out next and there’s still no eliminations, this is getting hectic. Rhett Titus is out next and he takes his time, I would do the same. Ali’s partner, LSG comes out next at number eleven. Taguchi Japan’s Ryusyke Taguchi is out next and he gets a great reaction from the crowd and he films the reaction - good on him. Will Ferrara is back and he highs Rhett Titus as the two use to be a tag team. Chase Owens from Bullet Club is in the ring next. We’re halfway in and Rocky Romero is in now: he goes after Bushi and basically everybody else in the ring. Every member of Roppongi 3ak is in the ring and the match just goes insane now. Milonas is out next, he’s a good laugh I assume. Coast to Coast double team him. Milonas eliminate them both, that’s good for him. Bad Luck Fale is out next and he got a great reaction. Cheeseburger almost goes out but he’s saved. Johnathan Gresham is out next and he’s officially my pick, he’s such a great technical wrestler. He had a fantastic match a good year ago and I loved him since. Tracy Williams at 19 and I don’t really know who he is. Yoshi-Hashi at 20 and Williams is battling Suzuki with a headbutt, wouldn’t recommend that. Who’s next? PJ Black, that’s who! The former Justin Gabriel is in now. There’s over 10 people in the ring but Chase Owens is eliminated. Entrant 22 is fan-favourite, Jushin “Thunder” Liger. He goes after all comers. He throws out Milonas like he’s a sack of...well nothing. TK O’Ryan is in the ring next. Vinny Marseglia out next, two kingdom members out right next to each other - a conspiracy? Yes, a conspiracy. Delirious is out followed by Tomohiro Ishii. Ishii eliminates Black. Black goes back to the back. Tory Yano - the walking talkin GIF is here. He goes to commentary and Colt Cabana is in be ring next. What? I don’t see what the point in that was? Number 28 is Hirooki Goto. Hirooki go to the ring, am I right lads?! Everybody teams up to eliminate Bad Luck Fale, he’s gone. Number 29 is Bullet Club’s King Haku. Who’s number 30 going to be? The Great Muta. Delirious is out. Cabana and Suzuki throw down. Cabana is eliminated as well. Gresham is out and he was my pick so I’m a little bit surprised there. Suzuki and Ishii exchange forearms and I smell concussions. Suzuki catches Ishii from eliminating hi
and traps him into an arm bar. Ishii puts out Suzuki. The Kingdom throw out Cheeseburger. Haku goes out, we’re down to 5. Muta, kingdom, Ishii and Liger. Ishii goes out and it’s getting interesting. The kingdom get eliminated and it’s Liger and Muta. Kenny King throws them both out and it turns out he was never eliminated, I mean fair play to him but a Liger victory would’ve been great.

Thoughts: This was a really fun opening match and after the match, Muta mists King. I really enjoyed this match but since it’s a rumble match, I’m not going to give it a rating.

Will Ospreay (C) Vs. Jeff Cobb (C) (Winner Takes All)

I’m really surprised that this is kicking off the snow but it’s still going to be brilliant. This is winner takes all and I think that this will be really interesting. The match kicks off with Cobb splashing Ospreay in the corner and it just gets better from there. Ospreay uses the barricade to his advantage and he does a flying forearm over it. The match gets even more insane, Ospreay dives over the ropes but Cobb counters it however Ospreay counters that! Cobb hits a massive superplex to Ospreay from the top rope. It just gets better from there, Ospreay hits be oscutter but Cobb kicks out in an incredible near fall. Cobb picks up the win which I am very surprised about! Cobb is now both the ROH TV champion and the never openweight champion.

Thoughts: This was such a good opening match, really has me pumped for the rest of the show.

RUSH Vs. Dalton Castle

RUSH kicks off the match with several shotgun drop kicks and beats Dalton Castle in a matter of seconds! This lasted 25 seconds at most.

Thoughts: I feel really bad for Castle, he went from ROH champ to losing in under 30 seconds at Madison Square Garden. After the match, Dalton Castle attacked the boys. At least he got to nail his finisher on a big stage.

Mayu Iwatani (C) Vs. Kelly Klein (Women Of Honor Championship)

Iwatani and Klein lock up. The two wrestle in the ground and it’s a very technical match, Iwatani locks in a rear naked choke and it’s sinked in. Klein gets out and they just wrestle. Iwatani dives to Klein on the outside, this has already exceeded my expectations. They exchange forearms and Iwatani goes down. I wasn’t really looking forward to this match but it was really good. Kelly Klein wins the match and the women of honor championship.

Thoughts: As I said, this was a great match. I’m really happy with how this turned out. I underestimated it and it was great. After the match, Velvet Sky, Angelina Love and Mandy Leon attack the new champion and form a stable called “The Allure”.

Juice Robinson Vs. Bully Ray

As Juice Robinson can’t compete, Flip Gordon comes out! Looks like they’re having a match! It also looks like it’s a Chicago street fight, Bully Ray pulls out the table. Flip Gordon brings out the kendo stick and Silas Young and Shane Taylor come out. Is Young and Taylor a team now? Probably. The lights flicker red and who comes out? None other than Lifeblood? Who are they? Juice Robinson is there so at least I see a familiar face. It’s a six man tag for..some reason? I guess it’s Gordon and Lifeblood Vs. Taylor, Young and Bully Ray. This was really entertaining, it was weapon galore. There was a wooden pallet involved at one point - a wooden pallet. At one point, Juice Robinson whacks Taylor with a trash can and then cannon balls him through the pallet. Flip Gordon’s team picks up the win and it’s good to see him back in the ring.

Thoughts: This was a great match, I really enjoyed this.

Taiji Ishimori (C) Vs. Bandido Vs. Dragon Lee (IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship)

The pace of this match was a different breed, I expected that though. 3 unique characters were bound to create something special and I was a big fan of this match. This was incredible and the winner of the match was Dragon Lee. I was totally shocked by this match.

Thoughts: This is match of the night so far.

Guerillas Of Destiny (C) Vs. Villain Enterprises (C) Vs. EVIL & Sanada Vs. The Briscoes (IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Titles & ROH Tag Team Titles)

This match was fantastic, high intensity throughout the whole match. It was just one massive brawl, it genuinely felt that every team wanted to win it and that’s what made this match so entertaining. It was fast paced and kept me engaged for the full match. PCO got power-bombed out the ring and sat back up which was cool. The G.O.D win the match.

Thought: What a match this was, it gets a high 3.75 rating from me.

Rating: 3.75

Zack Sabre Jr (C) Vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi (British Heavyweight Championship)

I expected this match to be technical and why wouldn’t I? Zack Sabre Jr is here! I enjoyed this match, there was great grappling in it and I appreciate great grappling. Sabre won with a big submission which looked like agony to be in.

Thoughts: I really enjoyed this match, a fun bout.

Rating: 3.5

Tetsuya Naito (C) Vs. Kota Ibushi (IWGP Intercontinental Championship)

On paper, I knew this would be a good match and it lived up to the hype. What else is there to say? It was a great match, like a really great match. Naito and Ibushi have fantastic chemistry together and it really showed here. The near falls in this match was crazy. Kota Ibushi is the new Intercontinental champion.

Thought: This may be the best match tonight although there’s still a few to go.

Jay Lethal (C) Vs. Marty Scurll Vs. Matt Taven (Ladder Match; ROH Championship)

This had so many ladder spots, Jay Lethal even killed a few fans with ladders. This was a fantastic match however I thought it went a little too long. It’s well deserved for Taven so that’s good that he won. It was a great ladder match and don’t have much complaints.

Thoughts: Fantastic match

Rating: 4.5

Jay White (C) Vs. Kazuchika Okada (IWGP Heavyweight Championship)

This match was great, you’d expect that from two fantastic wrestlers. The match had close near falls, tombstones, dives, fan action. The match had it all but finally Okada won and regained the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. It felt like it went for a good 30-40 minutes. I don’t get why White kicked out of 2 rainmakers in a row, if he was going to kick out, why not just do one and at least try and protect his finish. The low blow to Okada was nice heel work. It’s good to have Okada with the belt again.

Thoughts: This was a great match. As I said, nice to see Okada with the belt.

Rating: 4.25

Overall Thoughts: This PPV was fantastic and definitely worth checking out before Wrestlemania. What a match, what a card, what a PPV. Anyway, it’s currently 5am so I’m going to go to sleep because I need my sleep before I stay up to 5am once again for Wrestlemania.
