Canelo Alvarez Vs. Miguel Cotto (Flashback Boxing Analysis)

Earlier this week, the All Things Combat Twitter Page uploaded a poll asking YOU, what Boxing Analysis you’d like to see today and 43% wanted an analysis of a Cotto Vs. Canelo so that’s what’s going to happen. Feel free to come back on Thursday morning where we relive Gennady Golovkin fighting Kell Brook. But for now, let’s get into the fight.

Round 1

Canelo is sporting the purple while Cotto is in the pink. The fighters are trying to scout the others out while Cotto goes for a few punches. Not much happening in the first round.


My Thoughts: A typical opening round.


Round Winner: Miguel Cotto (10-9)

Round 2

Alvarez hits a good body shot which echoes throughout the arena, Cotto must feel that even to this day. Canelo hitting some good punches, he’s really timing his punches.


My Thoughts: A much better round for Canelo Alvarez.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (19-19)

Round 3

Alvarez starts the round off with a straight punch. Alvarez is hitting some hard body shots. Cotto is losing some bad shots here. Cotto is now getting some good shots in. I think Canelo has slightly won the round but there’s still 40 seconds remaining.


My Thoughts: Another good round.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (29-28)

Round 4

Cotto is doing some good combinations, he’s a classic boxer. He’s really good at timing his punches. Canelo gets a good head punch. Canelo gets a hard body shot. Cotto is unleashing some great shots into Canelo now.


My Thoughts: A good round for body shots.


Round Winner: Miguel Cotto (38-38)

Round 5

Canelo is getting great punches in. Cotto hits a combo the head but Canelo is a durable guy. Canelo hits a big uppercut.


My Thoughts: Enjoyable round.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (48-47)

Round 6

Cotto opens the round with a couple of weak looking punches. Canelo is getting some big hits and it was a great left punch.


My Thoughts: Another good round, Cotto looked decent but I think Canelo managed to secure this round.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (58-56)

Round 7

Lederman has the same scorecard as me so that’s something. Canelo getting a great body combo to Cotto, he’s hitting a lot of body shots which will tire Cotto out in the later rounds. Cotto is managing to withstand these body punches. Cotto gets a good combination in.


My Thoughts: A very close round, really close.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (68-65)

Round 8

Canelo is hitting really hard punches. Cotto hits a great body shot while Canelo hits a massive uppercut. This is explosive. Canelo gets a good right punch then switches to the left. This feels like a fight.


My Thoughts: What a round.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (78-74)

Round 9

Canelo is hitting some nice jabs. Cotto is doing some good damage with some body shots. Cotto is throwing some jabs but Canelo has thrown big shots there. I was going to give Cotto this round but Canelo has did a lot of damage so it’s really hard to tell.


My Thoughts: This was a good round which felt action packed from bell to bell.


Round Winner: Miguel Cotto (84-87)

Round 10

Canelo gets a few head punches to Cotto. Cotto gets a few straight jabs and keeps moving about. Canelo gets a few great punches but Cotto ends the round in trouble.


My Thoughts: This felt like a slower round when compared to the previous two.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (97-93)

Round 11

Cotto gets a a decent combination. Canelo is getting some good body shots. Alvarez gets a good right hook.


My Thoughts: A very calm round, both boxers getting tired.


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (107-102)

Round 12

Both men is going for the knockout. Cotto gets some good headshots. Alvarez is getting good hits in. Cotto gets some tired punches in. Less than a minute remains. Canelo gets great punches in to Cotto who is leaning against the ropes.


My Thoughts: A great fight to watch!


Round Winner: Canelo Alvarez (117-111)


That was a great fight and I’m glad that’s what the people wanted to see. I’ve been Josh and this was a flashback episode of the Boxing Analysis. There will be another flashback episode on Thursday and a normal episode in one week time as Tyson Fury fights Sefer Seferi.
