Can Tyron Woodley Go Down As The Greatest Welterweight Of All Time?
Tyron Woodley is the reigning defending welterweight champion and he’s been a dominant champion ever since defeating Robbie Lawler by stopping him in the first round. He’s had two fights with Stephen Thompson which he drew in the first fight but defeated Thompson in the second round. But if Tyron Woodley defeats Kamaru Usman at UFC 235 - can be become the welterweight greatest of all time?
Before we make an official decision, we have to talk about the other candidates and people who can be considered a welterweight great or as I call it; a welter great. I don’t actually - people who do fall them that deserve death sentences. Anyway, I think despite never winning the UFC Welterweight championship, Stephen Thompson should be mentioned. Ben Askren is a former bellator Welterweight Champion and a former ONE Welterweight champion and if he does win a UFC welterweight title then he is definitely considered for the spot - if not already. Robbie Lawler is up for debate. Matt Hughes as well with BJ Penn. We obviously cannot miss out Royce Gracie who shaped the UFC but there’s one man who stands out from all the rest; Georges St Pierre. St-Pierre ran the Welterweight division and just defended his title and took down everybody in his path. GSP has held the welterweight strap on 3 separate occasions and it’s clear to see why, he’s a monster!
Is Tyron Woodley better than Georges St Pierre? Personally, I don’t think so. Woodley is a fantastic fighter and has been criminally underrated but after he defeats Usman (which I think will happen) then he’s up for debate of being the welter GOAT.
